Dromedary Camel

56 destinations · 27 states

Native Range
North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, with introduced populations in Australia and other dry regions

The dromedary camel is easy to recognize by its single hump, but watching one closely reveals how many features are built for life in dry landscapes. Its long legs keep the body away from hot ground, while broad, padded feet help it walk across loose sand without sinking easily. Look at the face and you may notice long eyelashes and closable nostrils, useful defenses against blowing dust. The camel's mouth is equally well adapted. Tough lips allow it to browse on thorny plants and other rough vegetation that would be difficult for many animals to eat. The hump stores fat, not water, providing an energy reserve when food is scarce. Dromedaries can also go for long periods without drinking and then consume a large amount of water when it becomes available. At a zoo or wildlife park, their height is often the first thing that catches your attention. Then the unusual feet, lips, eyelashes, and constantly moving mouth start to explain how this familiar-looking animal is so well suited to desert life.
