A nonprofit zoo centered on rescued and rehomed wildlife, with more than 180 animals including big cats, bears, giraffes, wolves, and reptiles, plus educational programs and animal enrichment focused on individual care.
Plumpton Park Zoo is a nonprofit zoo with a strong emphasis on providing permanent homes for animals that can no longer be cared for by their previous owners. The zoo is home to more than 180 animals, with roughly half having been taken in from owners who could no longer keep them. Its collection includes mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, ranging from American black bears and cougars to giraffes, white lions, tigers, wolves, and Aldabra giant tortoises. This rescue-oriented role gives the zoo a more personal focus than a collection built primarily around geographic regions.
Animal care is central to the visitor experience. Each resident receives professional veterinary care and daily attention from zookeepers, while an environmental enrichment program is used to encourage natural behaviors by changing and stimulating the animals' surroundings. Educational programs and guided tours provide additional opportunities to learn about the animals and their care, including opportunities to feed the zoo's giraffe. Plumpton Park Zoo is particularly suited to travelers interested in rescued wildlife, animal welfare, and a smaller zoo where individual animal stories are an important part of the experience.
