Serval

Native Range
Sub-Saharan Africa

A serval can look almost delicate at first glance, but spend a few minutes watching one and its hunting skills start to make sense. Those unusually long legs lift the cat high above the grass, giving it a clear view of movement below. Large ears swivel independently as the serval listens for rodents hidden beneath vegetation. Then comes the fun part: a sudden pounce, often straight down onto prey the cat has detected by sound. Servals are especially well suited to hunting in tall grass and wetlands, where their spotted coats help break up their outline. At a zoo or wildlife destination, you may also notice how alert they remain even when resting. A serval might sit quietly for several minutes before its ears suddenly point toward a new sound. That combination of stillness and explosive movement makes them rewarding to watch closely, especially when the cat is exploring its habitat or testing the edges of a grassy area.
