Common Green Iguana

61 destinations · 31 states

Native Range
Central and South America, with introduced populations in parts of the Caribbean and Florida

The common green iguana can look almost prehistoric when it sits motionless on a branch, but a closer look reveals plenty of activity. Its long tail, spiny back, loose flap of skin beneath the throat, and powerful claws all have a role in its life in the trees. Watch one basking and you may notice it turning its body toward the warmth or shifting position to catch more sunlight. Green iguanas are mostly plant eaters, using their strong jaws to tear leaves, flowers, and fruit. Despite the name, adults can range from bright green to gray or brown, and their color may change with age, mood, temperature, or surroundings. Younger iguanas are often more vividly green. Keep an eye on the tail when the animal moves. It helps with balance while climbing and can also be used defensively. At a zoo or wildlife park, the challenge is often spotting an iguana before realizing it has been sitting above you the whole time.
