Forked River, NJ
A walkable animal refuge in New Jersey's Pine Barrens where rescued wildlife, exotic animals, farm animals, and birds receive permanent care, offering visitors a more sanctuary-focused experience than a conventional zoo.
Popcorn Park Animal Refuge is a sanctuary for animals that have experienced abandonment, injury, illness, cruelty, exploitation, old age, or other circumstances that prevent them from returning to the wild or living safely elsewhere. The refuge began in 1977 after taking in an injured raccoon and has grown into a home for more than 200 animals and birds in the Pine Barrens of Ocean County. Its residents include exotic animals, native wildlife, farm animals, reptiles, and birds, with big cats, primates, bears, deer, and farm species among the animals visitors may encounter.
The refuge is designed as a walkable outdoor attraction, allowing guests to move between animal habitats while learning about the residents and their rescue histories. Animals that can be rehabilitated and safely released are returned to the wild, while those unable to survive independently remain at Popcorn Park for lifelong care. Educational programs and guided visits can provide additional context about individual animals and their needs. The destination suits travelers interested in animal rescue and sanctuary work who want to see a diverse collection through that lens rather than a traditional zoo setting.
