Washington Park Zoo

Michigan City, IN

A hillside zoo near Lake Michigan combining animals from five continents with winding wooded paths, historic WPA-era structures, and a sanctuary role for exotic animals that cannot return to the wild.

Why Visit

Washington Park Zoo occupies a hilly, wooded setting across from the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan, where more than 15 acres of winding paths connect animal habitats and historic WPA-era structures. The zoo also serves as a sanctuary for exotic animals that were formerly kept as pets, rescued from difficult circumstances, or have injuries that prevent their return to the wild.

The animal collection represents Australia, Africa, Asia, North America, and South America, giving visitors a varied wildlife experience within a relatively compact property. The terrain and tree-lined trails make the setting a notable part of the visit, while an observation tower provides another way to experience the grounds. Washington Park Zoo suits travelers looking for a smaller regional zoo with a distinctive landscape and a mix of traditional animal exhibits, sanctuary residents, and historical character.
