Barred Owl

Native Range
Eastern and central North America

Barred owls have a distinctive series of horizontal and vertical streaks across the chest that make them easy to recognize up close. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch the round face as an owl turns toward sounds around the habitat. Their large eyes help them see in low light, while the facial disk directs sound toward the ears as they listen for prey. Barred owls often spend the day resting quietly on a branch, so a close look can reveal details that are easy to miss when they are active at night. When they do move, the flight is remarkably quiet, with broad wings carrying the owl between perches without much noise. Listen for their familiar calls, which have a distinctive conversational rhythm and are often heard before the bird is spotted. Native to forests and wooded wetlands across eastern and central North America, barred owls hunt small mammals, birds, amphibians, and other prey. Their calm daytime posture can be deceptive. Once evening arrives, those same still eyes and silent wings become useful tools for hunting through the trees.
