Hanna City, IL
A large zoological park devoted to Midwest native wildlife, with wooded animal trails, naturalistic habitats, educational programs, and outdoor activities that let visitors explore species including bison, black bears, cougars, elk, and wolves.
Wildlife Prairie Park is a large zoological park in central Illinois focused exclusively on animals native to the Midwest. More than 60 species live across the park, including bison, black bears, cougars, elk, and wolves, with many animals having been rescued and unable to return to the wild. The park's animal habitats are designed to resemble native environments, making the landscape itself an important part of the wildlife experience.
A 1.5-mile Animal Trail winds through Merrill Woods and other wooded areas, offering views of animals in spacious settings rather than conventional indoor exhibits. Forest Hall Education Center provides closer encounters with smaller animal ambassadors, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, while educational programs and keeper talks add interpretation throughout the park. Visitors can also explore the grounds through hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and the Prairie Zephyr train. Wildlife Prairie Park suits travelers who want a combination of native wildlife viewing, outdoor recreation, and environmental learning in a setting where the surrounding landscape is integral to the visit.
