Tallahassee, FL
A 52-acre museum combining native Florida wildlife exhibits, historic buildings, natural trails, and cultural collections, offering a broad look at the natural and human history of the Big Bend region.
Tallahassee Museum combines wildlife, natural history, and regional cultural heritage across a 52-acre outdoor setting. Its Wildlife Florida Trail uses elevated boardwalks to present native animals in naturalistic habitats, including black bears, red wolves, river otters, cougars, deer, and birds of prey. The grounds also include a half-mile nature trail through live oak hammock, longleaf pine habitat, and along Lake Hiawatha, giving the wildlife exhibits a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
The museum extends well beyond animal exhibits. Historic buildings such as Bellevue plantation house, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, and Concord Schoolhouse explore North Florida's past, while Big Bend Farm recreates rural life in the 1880s with farm buildings, crops, and domestic animals. Other features include Jim Gary's Twentieth Century Dinosaurs, a collection of large sculptures made from discarded automobile parts, and outdoor adventure activities. The combination of living wildlife, natural trails, historic structures, and regional collections makes Tallahassee Museum particularly suited to travelers who want to explore North Florida's natural and cultural heritage in a single visit.
