Military macaws bring a splash of green to an aviary, but their behavior is just as worth watching as their color. The olive-green body, bright red forehead, and blue feathers on the wings and tail create a distinctive pattern that becomes especially noticeable when a bird takes flight. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch the powerful hooked bill at work. A macaw can crack hard seeds and nuts, climb using its bill for extra support, and hold food with one foot while tearing pieces apart. Their loud calls often carry across the enclosure, especially when paired birds are communicating. Look for gentle grooming or close contact between companions, since military macaws are social and often travel in pairs or groups. In the wild, they use cliffs and large trees for nesting and move between forested areas and open woodland. Their strong wings make them impressive flyers, while their climbing skills reveal just how useful that oversized bill can be beyond feeding.
