A child-focused museum and zoo combining a walk-through aviary, hands-on science exhibits, and a dinosaur garden, with interactive animal habitats designed to encourage exploration, movement, and curiosity about the natural world.
Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo combines a small wildlife collection with an interactive children's museum, creating a destination where animal observation and hands-on science are closely connected. The zoo is enclosed by a protective net, allowing birds to move through the space while visitors explore habitats including Meerkat Desert, Raccoon Creek, Cichlid Lake, Rabbit Meadow, and Tortoise Savannah. The collection includes more than 60 species and 400 specimens.
The experience extends beyond traditional animal exhibits. Children can explore a tree house and elevated netting within the zoo, look through an underwater tunnel, and visit Wildlife Circle to meet animals with animal care specialists. Indoors, hands-on exhibits introduce concepts such as gravity, motion, balance, electricity, and magnetism. The California Dinosaur Garden adds an outdoor fossil dig, prehistoric plants, and life-sized dinosaur sculptures. With its emphasis on play-based learning, close animal encounters, and interactive exhibits, the destination is particularly suited to families seeking a compact outing centered on science, nature, and wildlife.
