Fennec Fox

Native Range
North Africa

The fennec fox looks almost cartoon-like, but its oversized ears have a very practical purpose. Spend a few minutes watching one and you may notice those ears constantly swiveling as it listens for sounds above and below the sand. At a zoo, the ears are often the first thing children spot, but the fox's nighttime habits are just as interesting. Fennec foxes are adapted to the heat of the Sahara, with thick fur on their feet that helps protect their pads from hot sand and provides extra grip. They can also get much of the water they need from their food. In an exhibit, look for quick bursts of movement followed by long stretches of quiet observation. A fennec may suddenly pounce toward the ground, dig with its front paws, or freeze with its ears pointed in different directions. That mix of alertness and playful energy makes even a small enclosure worth watching closely.
