Niabi Zoo

Niabi Zoo is a 40-acre zoo set within a forest preserve in Coal Valley, with more than 800 animals representing 139 species from around the world. Its collection spans mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, aquatic animals, and invertebrates, giving the zoo considerable variety while maintaining a strong emphasis on conservation. Niabi participates in cooperative managed breeding programs and provides care for species ranging from vulnerable animals to critically endangered wildlife, while also serving as a sanctuary for displaced animals rescued from private homes, government seizures, and closed facilities.

The visitor experience includes traditional animal habitats alongside opportunities to learn directly from the zoo's education and animal care teams. Conservation educators and volunteer naturalists provide interpretation around the zoo, while animal encounters can offer behind-the-scenes access involving species such as sloths, white rhinos, and Aldabra tortoises.
