Native Range
East African forests, especially Kenya

The eastern bongo is a large forest antelope that can be surprisingly hard to spot despite its size. Its rich chestnut coat is crossed by narrow white stripes, a pattern that helps break up its outline among shafts of light and dense vegetation. Both males and females have long, spiral horns, although males are generally larger. Watch one closely and you'll notice how carefully it moves through its surroundings, often lifting its head to listen before continuing through the brush. Bongos feed mainly on leaves, shoots, herbs, and other vegetation, using their long tongues to reach plants that grow among the forest cover. They are also strong runners and can push through thick vegetation with surprising ease. Eastern bongos are associated with highland forests in Kenya and are critically endangered in the wild, with habitat loss and hunting among the pressures they face. At a zoo, their bold striping and curved horns are easy to appreciate, but the quiet way they navigate their enclosure gives a better sense of why this antelope is so well suited to life in dense forest.
