Central and North America, from southern Canada through the United States and into northern Mexico

Tiger salamanders are large, sturdy amphibians with bold yellow or olive markings that can make them look more like miniature land predators than delicate salamanders. They spend much of their lives hidden underground or beneath logs and rocks, emerging when conditions are cool and damp. Watch one in an exhibit and you'll notice its slow, deliberate walk, followed by sudden movements when it spots food. Tiger salamanders eat earthworms, insects, slugs, small fish, and other animals they can swallow, using a quick snap to grab prey. They are closely tied to seasonal ponds for breeding, and adults may return to the same general areas when conditions are right. Some individuals retain larval features into adulthood, including external gills and a more aquatic lifestyle, making the species especially varied in appearance. At a zoo or aquarium, their broad heads, stout bodies, and chunky limbs are worth a closer look. A salamander sitting quietly under cover may seem inactive, but that stillness is part of a life spent waiting for the right moment to emerge and feed.
