Living Desert Zoo

Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park is a native wildlife zoo and botanical garden dedicated to the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem. The park exhibits more than 40 species of animals alongside hundreds of species of plants native to the region, creating a visitor experience centered on the distinctive flora and fauna of the desert rather than a broad international zoo collection. Its position on a ridge in the Ocotillo Hills also provides views across the Pecos River valley and Carlsbad.

The main zoo route is a 1.3-mile walking tour through desert habitats, with interpretive displays and opportunities for wildlife viewing and birding along the way. The park offers nature interpretation and education programs, while its gardens and greenhouse add a botanical dimension to the animal exhibits. Visitors can also explore the adjacent Ocotillo Hills Nature Trail.
