Downtown Aquarium

Downtown Aquarium Houston occupies a redeveloped historic waterworks and fire station complex and combines an aquarium with a broader entertainment setting. Its Aquarium Adventure Exhibit holds more than 500,000 gallons of water and presents hundreds of species through themed environments inspired by different geographic settings. The result is less like a conventional gallery of tanks and more like a series of immersive habitat areas within a downtown attraction.

The exhibits range from Texas Bayou, with alligators, turtles, and bullfrogs, to Shipwreck, where reef fish surround a recreated Spanish galleon. Rainforest features piranhas, freshwater stingrays, frogs, and an emerald tree boa, while Maharaja's Temple focuses on tigers. Stingray Reef adds a hands-on element, allowing guests to touch and feed stingrays. The Shark Voyage train travels through a 200,000-gallon shark tank, offering views of sand tiger sharks and a critically endangered sawfish. Its mix of aquatic exhibits, terrestrial wildlife, interactive encounters, and themed rides suits travelers seeking a varied attraction rather than a traditional aquarium visit.
