Snow Leopard

Native Range
Central and South Asia

Snow leopards can disappear into a rocky habitat while sitting almost in plain sight. Their pale, spotted coats blend remarkably well with stone, so finding the cat is often part of the experience. Once it starts moving, watch the oversized paws and long, thick tail. Those broad paws help snow leopards travel across snow, while the tail provides balance on steep mountain terrain and can curl around the body for warmth while resting. A snow leopard may climb to a high ledge, patrol its surroundings, rub against rocks, or suddenly leap between levels with little apparent effort. Unlike lions and tigers, snow leopards cannot roar, although they communicate with growls, chuffs, meows, and other calls. Their natural home stretches across rugged mountains where cliffs and broken terrain suit their powerful legs. Even when one is resting quietly, spotting a pair of pale eyes among the rocks can take a surprisingly careful search.
