Reticulated pythons are impressive before they even start moving, but watching one explore gives a better sense of how such a large snake navigates its surroundings. At a zoo or wildlife destination, look closely at the intricate net-like pattern running along the body, which gives this python its name. The head moves slowly from side to side while the forked tongue flicks in and out, gathering information about what is nearby. When the snake begins to travel, powerful muscles ripple beneath the scales as the long body follows. Reticulated pythons are excellent swimmers and can climb as well, allowing them to use forests, wetlands, rivers, and other habitats across tropical Asia. They are nonvenomous constrictors that subdue prey with their muscular coils and swallow meals whole. Young snakes can be surprisingly agile in trees, while adults spend more time on the ground and near water. A close view also reveals how the geometric markings change subtly along the length of the body, making a resting python look almost like a moving piece of patterned artwork.
