Native Range
New Guinea, northern Australia, and nearby islands

Green tree pythons can look almost motionless when wrapped around a branch, but their resting pose is part of what makes them fun to watch. At a zoo or wildlife destination, look for the snake's head resting neatly in the center of its coils while the body loops over a branch. The bright green color helps the adult blend into leafy vegetation, while a long, slender body is well suited to life above the ground. Unlike many snakes that move primarily along the floor, green tree pythons spend much of their time in trees and can grip branches with their strong, flexible bodies. Watch the tongue flick from the mouth as the snake gathers information about its surroundings. Young green tree pythons can have striking yellow, orange, or red coloring before changing to adult green. They feed on small mammals, birds, and other prey, often waiting patiently before making a quick strike. Native to New Guinea, northern Australia, and nearby islands, these arboreal pythons are a good reminder that some of the most interesting animal behavior can happen while an animal appears completely still.
