Greater Cleveland Aquarium

Greater Cleveland Aquarium occupies the ground floor of a historic brick powerhouse along the Cuyahoga River, giving the aquarium an unusual industrial setting for its aquatic exhibits. Seven galleries bring together more than 1,300 freshwater and saltwater animals, with the collection ranging from species native to Ohio lakes and rivers to wildlife from tropical forests, Asian waterways, and coastal environments. The building's exposed brick, former industrial spaces, and aquarium theming create a distinctive backdrop as visitors move between habitats.

The visit emphasizes close viewing and interactive experiences rather than simply looking through large viewing windows. The Coastal Boardwalk includes stingray and invertebrate touchpools, while the Shark Gallery centers on a 230,000-gallon habitat with sharks, stingrays, eels, and other fish. A 175-foot underwater seatube passes through the shark habitat, providing views from below the waterline.
