Burmese Rock Python

Burmese rock pythons have a way of making slow movement look purposeful. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch the head as the snake explores, flicking its tongue to gather information from the air before continuing along the ground. Their thick bodies are covered in irregular brown and tan markings that help them blend into forests, grasslands, wetlands, and rocky areas. A resting python may be tightly coiled, but when it begins to move, powerful muscles ripple beneath the patterned scales. They are strong swimmers too, and may spend time near water in their natural habitats. Burmese rock pythons are nonvenomous constrictors that use their muscular bodies to subdue prey such as mammals and birds. Their heat-sensing pits around the mouth can help detect warm-bodied animals, particularly in low light. Native to South and Southeast Asia, they are adaptable snakes found in a variety of habitats. A close look at the head, scales, and steady tongue-flicking reveals how much sensory information a python gathers while appearing almost completely calm.
