The Bactrian camel is instantly recognizable by its two humps, but watching one for a few minutes reveals details that a quick glance can miss. The shaggy coat becomes especially thick in winter, helping these camels handle the bitter cold of Central Asian deserts and steppes. When warmer weather arrives, much of that heavy coat sheds, sometimes leaving the animal looking surprisingly scruffy. Watch the mouth while it grazes. Bactrian camels can chew tough, thorny vegetation that many animals would avoid, thanks to their tough lips and specialized mouths. Their long legs keep the body well above hot or cold ground, while broad, padded feet provide stability on loose terrain. Captive camels may also show a curious, expressive side, especially when investigating keepers, food, or nearby herd members. The wild Bactrian camel is critically endangered, making encounters with this remarkable desert survivor especially meaningful. At a zoo or wildlife park, its unusual build becomes much easier to appreciate when you see it moving and feeding rather than simply standing still.
