Miniature donkeys may be small, but their personalities are often anything but. Watch one for a few minutes and you'll see the long ears swiveling toward every sound, the nose investigating anything new, and the animal pausing to decide whether it really wants to move. These sturdy little donkeys are descendants of small Mediterranean donkey breeds and were traditionally used as working animals. Their compact size makes them easy to approach, while their calm, curious nature can make them a favorite around family-friendly animal areas. Miniature donkeys spend much of their day grazing or browsing, and they are well suited to eating coarse vegetation that other animals may ignore. They are also social and often form strong bonds with companions, greeting one another with quiet nudges, sniffing, and the occasional bray. Look closely at the coat, muzzle, and ears because individuals can have very different markings and expressions. A miniature donkey standing quietly may seem unremarkable at first, but give it a little time and its alert ears and curious reactions usually tell a different story.
