Leopards are masters of using their surroundings, which becomes obvious when you watch one move through an exhibit. A leopard may settle quietly on a high branch, almost disappearing among leaves and shadows, then climb down with careful, controlled steps. Its spotted coat breaks up the shape of the body, while the long tail helps with balance as the cat moves along branches or uneven ground. Look for the ears and eyes when the leopard is resting. Even when the body seems relaxed, the head may turn toward a sound or movement somewhere else in the habitat. Leopards are strong climbers and can haul prey into trees, where food is safer from many competing predators. Their powerful shoulders and forelimbs are especially noticeable when one climbs or stretches. Wild leopards live across a wide range of habitats, from forests and grasslands to dry scrub, which helps explain their adaptable nature. If one chooses a high perch, keep watching. A quiet leopard overhead can reveal more about this cat's lifestyle than a quick glimpse at ground level.
