Common Zebra

Native Range
Eastern and southern Africa

The common zebra, also known as the plains zebra, is instantly recognizable by its black-and-white stripes, but watching a herd reveals plenty of details beyond the pattern. Each zebra has its own stripe arrangement, and the markings may help make it harder for biting flies to land. Herds stay alert while grazing, with ears constantly turning toward sounds and individuals occasionally lifting their heads to scan the surroundings. Grazing takes up much of the day, as zebras use their strong front teeth to crop grasses and then move on to fresh patches. Young foals have softer brownish stripes at first and stay close to their mothers, learning how to move with the herd. Zebras can also communicate through whinnies, snorts, and body language, with ears and facial expressions revealing a surprising amount. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch how the herd moves rather than focusing only on individual animals. A quiet group can suddenly bunch together, trot across the enclosure, or stop as one when something catches their attention.
