Common Warthog

Native Range
Sub-Saharan Africa

The common warthog has a face that looks almost comical at first, but spend a few minutes watching one and its design starts to make sense. The large tusks curve upward from the mouth, while the paired facial bumps, or warts, help protect the face during fights. Warthogs spend much of their day grazing and digging for roots, bulbs, and other foods, often dropping to their knees as they work through the soil. That kneeling posture is one of the easiest behaviors to spot at a zoo or wildlife park. Their tails provide another fun detail. When a warthog runs, it often holds the tail straight up like a little flag, making it surprisingly easy to follow through tall grass. Despite their stocky build, warthogs can move quickly when startled. Piglets may follow their mother closely, while adults can disappear into burrows when danger approaches. Watching a warthog feed, dig, or trot across an enclosure gives visitors a much better sense of the practical, hard-working nature behind that unmistakable face.
