The Arctic fox looks perfectly suited to cold weather, with a compact body, short ears, and thick fur that helps conserve heat. Its coat also changes with the seasons. Many individuals turn white in winter, while the summer coat is usually brown or gray, making the same fox look remarkably different at different times of year. Watch one at a zoo during warmer months and you may see it exploring, sniffing around rocks, or digging through vegetation with surprising energy. Arctic foxes eat a varied diet that can include lemmings, birds, eggs, insects, berries, and carrion, so they are skilled opportunistic hunters. Their small ears reduce heat loss, while furry paws provide insulation against snow and ice. In winter, an Arctic fox may curl its bushy tail around its body like a blanket while resting. The compact build that looks almost cute at first glance is actually a collection of practical adaptations for surviving one of the planet's coldest environments.
