Southern Stingray

Native Range
Western Atlantic coastal waters, from the southeastern United States to northern South America and the Caribbean

The southern stingray is easy to recognize on the sandy bottom, where its broad, diamond-shaped body glides with surprisingly little effort. Spend a few minutes watching and you may notice the stingray using its winglike fins to skim just above the sand, then settling down almost completely still. Its eyes sit on top of the head, while the mouth and gill openings are underneath, giving it a distinctive look as it searches for food. Southern stingrays often use their flattened bodies to stir up sand while hunting for worms, small crustaceans, and other prey hidden below the surface. At an aquarium, the animal's graceful movements can be especially fun to follow from different viewing angles. Look closely at the long tail too. It trails behind like a whip and carries the venomous spine that gives stingrays their name.
