A red wolf can look deceptively lean and delicate until you see how it moves. Its long legs, narrow muzzle, and large ears give it a distinctive profile, while the reddish-brown coloring is especially noticeable around the face, neck, and shoulders. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch the ears turn toward sounds as the wolf investigates its surroundings, or look for quiet interactions between members of a pair or family group. Red wolves are generally social, but they can also spend time resting or exploring on their own. Their diet includes rabbits, rodents, and other small to medium-sized animals, so a wolf may spend part of its day sniffing and searching rather than simply walking around. Native to the southeastern United States, red wolves once ranged across a much larger area. Today, they are among the world's rarest wild canids, making close views at wildlife facilities especially meaningful. A few minutes of observation can reveal a canid that looks familiar at first glance but has a character all its own.
