Mexican grey wolves have a distinctive, thoughtful way of moving through their habitat. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch how the ears turn toward distant sounds while the wolf pauses to sniff, scan, and assess what is happening around it. Their coats can range from gray and brown to reddish tones, often with darker markings along the back and face. Unlike some canids that spend much of their time rushing around, a wolf may simply walk a familiar route before settling down in the shade. Social behavior can be especially interesting when several wolves are together. Look for gentle greetings, playful interactions, or one animal following another as the group moves through the habitat. Mexican grey wolves are the smallest surviving gray wolf subspecies and are native to the forested mountains and grasslands of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Their connection to these landscapes becomes easier to picture when you see them moving quietly through a habitat with plenty of room to roam.
