Scottsdale, AZ
A wildlife sanctuary focused on rescuing and caring for native Arizona animals, with guided tours that introduce visitors to permanent residents and the individual stories behind their sanctuary lives.
Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center is a wildlife sanctuary in Scottsdale dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing, and providing lifelong care for Arizona wildlife that cannot return to the wild. Its permanent residents include black bears, bobcats, mountain lions, Mexican gray wolves, coyotes, javelinas, and other native species. The center also participates in the Mexican Wolf Species S.A.F.E. Program, providing care for part of the managed population.
Public access is centered on guided sanctuary tours rather than independent zoo-style admission. The two-hour Walk with Wildlife tour follows a route through the sanctuary while guides share the stories of resident animals and how they came to the center. Twilight and other guided experiences offer different perspectives on the animals' behavior and daily routines. Because visits require advance reservations, the experience is more structured than a conventional wildlife park. Southwest Wildlife particularly suits travelers interested in Arizona's native wildlife, animal rescue, and the individual histories of animals living in sanctuary.
