Navajo Nation Zoo

Navajo Nation Zoo and Botanical Park is a small, regionally focused zoo in Window Rock that places native Southwest wildlife and Navajo cultural connections at the center of the experience. The zoo is described by its operators as the only Native American owned-and-operated zoo in the United States and provides a home for injured or orphaned wildlife. Its collection includes more than 100 animals representing just over 50 species, with exhibits covering mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. The zoo occupies nine acres within Tse Bonito Tribal Park.

Regional wildlife receives particular attention, including Mexican gray wolves, desert bighorn sheep, black-footed ferrets, native fish, and reptiles such as chuckwallas. The Discovery Center includes smaller species and aquatic exhibits, while the Golden Eagle Sanctuary and Education Center provides a dedicated setting for viewing these culturally important birds. Interpretive material connects several species with Navajo traditions, language, and the landscapes of the Navajo Nation. The zoo suits travelers interested in regional wildlife, Indigenous perspectives on animals, and a smaller, community-focused zoological experience.
