The Indochinese clouded leopard is the kind of animal that can make you slow down and search the exhibit twice. Its cloud-like markings help it blend into forest shade, while its long tail provides balance as it moves through branches and along narrow ledges. This is an agile cat that spends much of its time climbing, so look upward rather than focusing only on the ground. The large canine teeth are another detail worth noticing. Despite being a relatively small wild cat, it has exceptionally long upper canines for its size, giving the face a distinctly prehistoric look. Clouded leopards are also capable climbers that can descend tree trunks headfirst, an unusual skill that becomes easier to appreciate when an animal moves around a multi-level habitat. Their natural range includes the forests of mainland Southeast Asia, where dense vegetation gives them plenty of cover. At a zoo, patient observers may catch a glimpse of those climbing skills before the leopard slips quietly back into the shade.
