Native Range
Central and eastern South America

Hyacinth macaws are impossible to overlook in an aviary. Their deep cobalt-blue feathers, bright yellow skin around the eyes and lower bill, and enormous black bill give them a striking appearance, but their behavior adds just as much interest. Watch the bill closely as a macaw cracks tough palm nuts that would challenge many other birds. The bill also helps with climbing, letting the bird pull itself along branches and ropes. Strong, flexible feet can hold food in place while the macaw works on it with the bill, making feeding look almost like a two-handed task. At a zoo or wildlife destination, listen for loud calls and watch how a pair interacts through gentle touches, vocalizations, or playful movements. Their broad wings become especially impressive when one crosses a large aviary. Hyacinth macaws are native to parts of central and eastern South America, where they are closely associated with palm-rich habitats and open woodland. A close view reveals fine details in the feathers that are easy to miss from a distance.
