Chilean Flamingo

Native Range
Andes and southern South America

Chilean flamingos bring plenty of movement to what can otherwise look like a quiet wetland habitat. A group may stand together for several minutes, then suddenly begin feeding, preening, or walking through the shallows in a loose line. Watch the bill closely during feeding. Its unusual shape lets the flamingo filter tiny organisms from the water and mud while the bird sweeps its head from side to side. Their long legs make it easy to wade through water that would be too deep for many other birds, and their webbed feet help them move across soft, muddy ground. At a zoo or wildlife destination, look for wing stretches too. When several birds open their wings at once, the black flight feathers create a sharp contrast with the pink and coral plumage. Chilean flamingos are native to parts of southern South America, including high-altitude wetlands in the Andes. Their coloring comes partly from pigments in their diet, making feeding behavior an important part of what you see.
