The white-blotched river stingray brings a very different look to a freshwater aquarium. Its broad, rounded disc is covered with pale spots and blotches that stand out against a darker background, giving each animal a distinctive pattern. Watch from above or from an underwater viewing window and you may see it glide close to the bottom with gentle waves moving along the edges of its fins. It often stays low over the sand or hides partly beneath the substrate, so a quick glance can miss it completely. Take a little longer and subtle movements become easier to notice as the ray searches for food on or beneath the riverbed. The long tail follows behind the body and carries a venomous spine, a feature shared by other stingrays. In the wild, this freshwater ray lives in the warm, slow-moving waters of South America, where its flattened shape helps it move efficiently along the river floor.
