The tiger ratsnake is a long, alert snake that rewards visitors who watch its movements rather than simply its pattern. Depending on the species and region, the body can show bold bands or contrasting markings, while the slender shape allows the snake to move quickly through vegetation, rocks, and branches. In an exhibit, look for the head leading the way as it explores. Frequent tongue flicks help collect chemical information from the air, giving the snake a detailed sense of what is nearby. Tiger ratsnakes are nonvenomous and generally rely on speed, agility, and constriction when taking prey. They may hunt rodents, birds, frogs, lizards, and other small animals, depending on their habitat. Some are capable climbers and may use elevated branches or ledges as lookout points. A snake that appears motionless can suddenly become very deliberate and active when it begins investigating a new part of the habitat. Watching that transition is often more revealing than a quick glance, especially when you notice how the snake uses its tongue, eyes, and body position to explore every corner.
