King cobras have a presence that becomes especially noticeable when one decides to move. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch the head and neck as the snake explores its surroundings, tongue flicking to gather information from the air. When threatened, a king cobra can raise the front part of its body and spread a long, narrow hood, creating a silhouette that is hard to mistake. Despite that display, much of the time it moves calmly through the habitat or rests in a sheltered spot. King cobras are the world's longest venomous snakes, and their size becomes easier to appreciate when one stretches out along the ground. They are unusual among snakes because they feed heavily on other snakes, including smaller venomous species. Native to forests, bamboo stands, grasslands, and other habitats across South and Southeast Asia, they are capable climbers and strong swimmers. Look closely at the body and you may notice how smoothly the muscles work beneath the scales as the snake travels.
