Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth

Native Range
Central and northern South America

Hoffmann's two-toed sloths are masters of taking life slowly, but watching one for a few minutes can reveal plenty of small movements. A sloth may reach carefully for a branch, pull a leaf toward its mouth, or reposition itself with deliberate, surprisingly strong movements. Their long curved claws make sense when you see how securely they hang from branches, often remaining suspended even while they rest. At a zoo or wildlife destination, look for the facial features that give sloths their gentle expression, then watch the limbs rather than expecting quick action. They are built for life in the trees, with long arms and flexible joints that help them move through the canopy. Hoffmann's two-toed sloths are mainly nocturnal, so daytime visitors may find one sleeping or resting high above the ground. When active, their slow climbing style is worth watching closely because every movement is controlled and purposeful. Native to forests of Central and northern South America, they spend much of their lives among branches, where their quiet lifestyle is perfectly suited to the canopy.
