Tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide

Green turtles have a calm, unhurried way of moving that makes them easy to watch for several minutes. In an aquarium, you may see one glide past the glass with slow, powerful strokes of its front flippers, then tilt upward and head toward the surface for a breath. Their smooth shells and paddle-shaped flippers are built for life in the ocean, and the size of an adult can be surprising when it passes close by. Look closely at the face, too. Green turtles have a gently rounded profile that looks quite different from the heavier head of a loggerhead. Despite their name, their shells are usually shades of olive, brown, or yellow rather than bright green. Adults mainly eat seagrasses and algae, and their feeding can be interesting to watch when they pull at vegetation with their beak. In the wild, green turtles travel between feeding grounds and nesting beaches, sometimes crossing remarkable distances.
