Wailuku, HI
A Hawaii-focused aquarium showcasing native marine life through living coral reefs, sharks and rays, sea turtles, and immersive exhibits that connect ocean wildlife with Hawaiian culture and stewardship.
Maui Ocean Center is a regional aquarium devoted to the marine life and ecosystems of Hawaiʻi, with exhibits designed around species and habitats found in Hawaiian waters. Its galleries include living Pacific corals, Hawaiian reef fish, sharks, rays, and green sea turtles, giving the aquarium a strong sense of place rather than a broad international collection. The Open Ocean exhibit uses an underwater tunnel to surround visitors with marine life, while the Living Reef focuses on more than 40 species of Hawaiian coral and the communities they support.
The experience also connects marine wildlife with Hawaiian history and culture. Hawaiians and the Sea explores traditional navigation, fishing practices, tools, and the longstanding relationship between Native Hawaiians and the ocean. Turtle Lagoon features Hawaiian green sea turtles, while the Humpbacks of Hawaiʻi Exhibit & Sphere uses an immersive 3D presentation to explore humpback whales in Maui waters. Daily interpretation by marine naturalists adds context throughout the galleries. The combination of native wildlife, coral reef habitats, cultural exhibits, and immersive viewing makes Maui Ocean Center particularly suited to travelers seeking a distinctly Hawaiian aquarium experience.
