Dwarf crocodiles may be smaller than many crocodilians, but watching one closely reveals plenty of character. At a zoo or wildlife destination, you might see one resting at the water's edge with its eyes just above the surface, then slowly slipping into the water when something catches its attention. Their broad snouts and dark, patterned skin help them blend into the shaded forest streams and swamps where they live. Look for the raised eyes and nostrils as the crocodile floats almost completely submerged, or watch the tail push it quietly through the water. Dwarf crocodiles are mainly nocturnal, so daytime visits may find them resting more often than moving. When they do become active, their compact build makes them surprisingly agile on land. They are adapted to forested waterways rather than the wide open wetlands associated with some larger crocodile species. A close look also reveals how much texture there is in their armored skin, especially around the back and tail.
