Blue-Throated Macaw

Blue-throated macaws are striking birds to watch because their vivid blue feathers are paired with a warm yellow-orange underside and a small patch of blue skin around the throat. At a zoo or aviary, look closely at the bill and feet during feeding. The massive hooked bill can crack hard foods, while the strong feet can hold a piece of food in place as the bird tears it apart. Their movements are often more playful than their size suggests. A macaw may climb around a perch, hang briefly upside down, or investigate another bird with a curious tilt of the head. Their loud calls can carry across a large enclosure, especially when a pair is communicating. Native to a small area of northern Bolivia, blue-throated macaws are closely associated with palm-rich savannas and forest edges. They are among the rarer macaws, making a close view particularly rewarding. Watch for the pale facial patch and the vivid blue throat when one turns toward you.
