The Mission golden-eyed tree frog is the sort of animal that rewards a close look. Its bright golden eyes stand out against a green body, while the wide toe pads help it cling to leaves and branches in the humid forests where it lives. At a zoo or aquarium, you may find one resting quietly on foliage, almost blending into its surroundings despite those striking eyes. These frogs are primarily nocturnal, so daytime encounters often involve a motionless frog tucked among leaves. Later, they can become much more active as they climb and search for insects. Their large eyes are especially useful in low light, and watching one reposition itself on a leaf gives you a good view of the gripping pads on its toes. Native to parts of Central America, the species is closely associated with forest streams and wet habitats where frogs can reproduce. Look beyond the bright eyes and notice how naturally the whole body works as a compact climbing package.
