The western green mamba is a snake that can seem almost hidden in plain sight. Its bright green coloring blends naturally with leafy vegetation, while a long, slender body allows it to move smoothly through branches. In an exhibit, look closely at the head and body for small changes in position. A mamba may remain still for a while before gliding along a branch with remarkably little visible effort. This is an agile, arboreal snake that spends much of its time above the ground, where its slender shape and green scales help it move through dense foliage. The pointed head and large eyes give it an alert appearance, and its forked tongue constantly samples the air as it explores. Western green mambas are venomous predators that feed mainly on birds and small mammals, using speed and agility rather than brute strength to catch prey. Their natural habitats include humid forests and wooded areas of West and central Africa. A quiet exhibit can make these details easier to notice, especially when the snake moves from one leafy perch to another.
