The toco toucan's huge orange bill is usually the first thing people notice, but watching the bird for a few minutes reveals why that bill is so useful. A toucan may hop along a branch, reach for fruit, and toss it back with a quick movement of the head. The bill is surprisingly light for its size, allowing the bird to handle food without carrying a heavy weight. Its black body, white throat, and bright blue skin around the eyes add more details to spot when it turns toward the viewing area. Toco toucans also make a variety of calls and can spend time moving between perches with short, direct flights. Native to open woodlands, savannas, and forest edges of central and eastern South America, they are often seen perched high above the ground in the wild. At a zoo, a close view makes small details easier to appreciate, especially the bill's colorful pattern and the quick way the toucan uses it to feed.
