Red-Eyed Tree Frog

Red-eyed tree frogs are small enough to miss at first, especially when they are tucked against a leaf. Then a bright red eye appears, followed by flashes of blue and orange on the legs as the frog shifts position. Their vivid colors are most noticeable when they move, since the green body helps them blend into rainforest foliage while resting. These frogs are mainly active at night, so an exhibit designed for nocturnal animals may reveal the most action. Look for one clinging to glass or a broad leaf with its sticky toe pads, or sitting almost motionless before making a sudden hop. Their large eyes and narrow, gripping toes are easy details for children to spot once they know what to look for. Native to tropical forests from southern Mexico through parts of Central and South America, red-eyed tree frogs spend much of their lives above the ground. A close look often turns a tiny frog into one of the most closely watched animals in the room.
