Loggerhead turtles are easy to underestimate until you watch one move through water. Their broad heads and powerful jaws give them a distinctive look, while their front flippers provide steady, graceful strokes that make swimming seem effortless. At an aquarium, look for the turtle gliding past the viewing window, changing direction with a slow sweep of its flippers, or rising toward the surface for a breath before heading down again. Their size can also be surprising, especially when one passes close to the glass. Loggerheads get their name from their large heads, which help them crush hard-shelled prey such as crabs and mollusks. In the wild, they travel through warm and temperate seas and return to beaches to lay their eggs.
