Grevy's Zebra

Grevy's zebras stand out even among other zebras, with narrow stripes that continue all the way down the legs and a large, rounded body. Their ears are unusually large too, swiveling constantly as the zebra listens to what is happening around it. Unlike plains zebras, Grevy's zebras do not form large, tightly bonded herds. Individuals often spread out while feeding, although mothers and foals stay closely connected. Watch a group for a few minutes and you'll see plenty of communication through ear position, posture, and short movements between animals. They spend much of their day grazing, but can also browse on leaves and other vegetation when conditions change. A foal stays close to its mother and learns to follow her movements across the landscape. Grevy's zebras are endangered, with habitat loss and competition for water affecting their remaining populations. At a zoo or wildlife destination, their elegant proportions and fine striping are easy to appreciate, but the most interesting moments often come when the animals pause grazing and start paying close attention to one another.
